Port McNeill, B.C. - June 15, 2020 The Town of Port McNeill, Village of Alert Bay, Community of Sointula and local area residents watched BC Ferries' Island Aurora arrive in the twilight hours of Sunday, June 14th. The impressive new vessel is slated to replace the Quadra Queen II, a ship that has been servicing the communities for decades.

Built in 2019 in Romania, the 80.8 metres Island Aurora travelled the globe before arriving in North Island waters Sunday. The vessel carries 47 cars, a maximum of 300 people and can cruise at 14 knots. It features a passenger lounge, heated solarium and seating area, outer deck seating, pet area, vending machines, accessible washrooms, and wheelchair stair lift.

Port McNeill Chamber of Commerce President Eric Dutcyvich welcomes the vessel on behalf of the Chamber Board and membership. "Designed with a focus on environmental sustainability and featuring increased passenger capacity, Island Aurora is a welcome addition to British Columbia's marine transportation corridor and our community. This is a critical part of BC's highway system, and we are pleased to see reinvestment into rural areas and increased passenger transportation levels to the island communities and for the local indigenous communities. We welcome the vessel, her crew, and all future passengers to Port McNeill."

Quadra Queen II is finishing her service effective June 15, 2020.
